Volvo Cars’ leading vehicle is their Volvo S80 saloon, a large sedan boasting a lot of interior space and comfort, and also a good, long boot. It now has become even more appealing as the Swedish automaker decided to shred off its traditional look to give way to a redesigned mould that people would love to be seen riding in.

This model feels solid and it also sports poise and balance even though it doesn’t look as razor-sharp as other sports car model. What was recently tested and reviewed was a an S80 that has front-wheel drive with diesel engine costing $71,950. There are other engine types available such as the 3.2-liter, 175kW six-cylinder and a robust 232kW, 4.4-liter V8 petrol engines. These are, unlike the Volvo S80 reviewed, all-wheel drives and cost $75,950 and $95,950 respectively.

The five-cylinder transverse engine of the diesel is located ahead of the front axle line, which is a recipe for understeer, and which could also be noticed as the load builds up on corners, but still the tires don’t give in.

An engine noise wouldn’t be heard when driving at a steady speed, and even when treading it down the highway. When this was tested, they made it run on Willunga Hill at 100km/h (1800rpm) and it gave out an impressive performance as there was no need to change down a gear in its six-speed sequential automatic.

There are a lot of good things that are worth to be proud of in this redesigned Volvo S80. It has comfortable leather seats and the font seats could be heated during a cold day and with three memory settings.

Its Volvo shocks can be set to sport, or comfortable, or even firmer advanced to keep the body flatter for an ‘advanced’ driving.

Like other modern car models, it has a dual-zone climate control which is a beauty, and demonstrating the Swedish ability to clear the windscreen which is covered in ice in just a minute or two.

The Volvo car parts that are for safety purposes include air bags, stability control, and special head restraints. The rear head restraints fold out of the way with just a click of a button for better visibility. It also has parking sonar that helps as well.

The following specs of the Volvo S80 D5 that was tested are an in-line five-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, delivering power output of 136kW at 4000rpm, having a torque of 400Nm at 2000-2750rpm, its transmission is a six-speed sequential shift automatic with front-wheel drive, its Volvo brakes have ventilated front discs and solid rear discs and also have anti-lock braking system, its fuel consumption is 7.2 liters/100km and the tank could fill up to 70 liters of fuel, and has 17-inch alloy wheels , 225/50 tires. Its price is at $71,950.

Volvo has long been a friend to the environment and to continue being an advocate for the preservation of the natural surroundings so they continue to develop and innovate Volvo auto parts like their Volvo engine parts to accommodate well the environment and lessen the harmful emissions their cars produce. Thus, the Swedish automaker has added two new engines and models to their range of FlexiFuel bio-ethanol. Later this year, a 2.0 liter FlexiFuel unit will be released and 2008 will see the arrival of the 5-cylinder 2.5 liter turbocharged engine to power the all new Volvo V70 estate and the new Volvo S80 executive saloon.

In the Volvo V70, the new four-cylinder 2.0F engine delivers an output of 145PS and 185Nm of torque and has a fuel consumption rate of 24.4 miles per gallon. For the Volvo S801, it offers fuel consumption of 25mpg. On the other hand, the turbocharged FlexiFuel with 2.5F five-cylinder offers a power output of 200 PS2.

The new FlexiFuel models will join the Volvo C30, S40, and V50 engines which have 1.8F producing 125PS. There are now five models available for the FlexiFuel range and so Volvo offers the broadest bio-ethanol range in the UK and hopes to garner 10,000 global sales this year.

Senior Vice president for Brand, Business and Product Strategy at Volvo Cars Lex Kerssemakers said, “Flexifuel has considerable potential in larger models too. That is why we plan to continuously expand the implementation of this technology over the coming years. It’s a move that is being driven by the extended availability of biofuels throughout Europe. Biofuel standardisation and guidelines for sustainable production within the EU would make the fuel’s development even smoother,.”

These FlexiFuel engines are powered by renewable E85 bio-ethanol fuel which produce 80% less fossil carbon dioxide for emission than the patrol3. What’s amazing with this FlexiFuel engine that Volvo was able to develop is that it could also run on petrol, should there be no E85 bio-ethanol fuel available. Both of these fuels could go to the same tanks in any mixture and it’s all due to the ground-breaking engine management system which observes the mixture and would automatically modify the injection and ignition timings to be able to maximize performance.

Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp explained this saying, “No single renewable fuel can replace petrol and diesel by itself. We believe in a multi-energy society where many different fuels and technologies are developed in parallel. E85 is a strong alternative that reduces dependency on fossil fuels, and our FlexiFuel program is an important part of our strategy to contribute to sustainable personal mobility.”
