The Volvo T6 Four-cylinder Turbodiesel Engine

Volvo auto parts have extended its variety for the V70 and the S80 by making four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines available for these models. The Volvo V70 parts and the Volvo S80 parts will be available with four-cylinder engines later this year—either a 2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with 145 hp or a 2-liter turbodiesel with 136 hp.

“More and more buyers focus on fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. It is highly important for us to give them more choices by making our competitive four-cylinder engines available in the new Volvo V70 and S80 models too. The 2-liter alternatives offer a very attractive combination of fuel economy and driving pleasure,” says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Brand, Business and Product Strategy at Volvo Cars in an interview.

The 2.0 petrol engine has 145 hp (107 kW) and 185 Nm of torque. It is a four-cylinder, normally aspirated unit—a modern, lightweight Aluminium engine featuring four-valve technology and a modern fuel injection system. The engine offers the same efficient combustion technology and exhaust gas treatment as other Volvo engines, offering good fuel economy and minimizes exhaust emissions.

The 2.0D is a four-cylinder turbodiesel with 136 hp (100kW) and 320 Nm of torque. It delivers rapid throttle response and a well-balanced sensitivity to the accelerator to offer the driver good control and driving pleasure.

The engine has second-generation common rail technology, which is similar to that of Volvo’s larger diesel models. A Diesel Particulate Filter is fitted as standard. The filter significantly reduces unburned soot particles in the emissions, thereby reducing the negative environmental impact. The system is cleaned (regenerated) automatically as the contents of the filter are burnt off at regular intervals.

Efficiency---The New Volvo C30

Volvo came up with a “Special Version” of the C30, appropriately calling it by the name of “Efficiency”. This version aims to be the flagship that will lead the fleet of Volvo cars in the future for the battle of fuel efficiency and clean exhausts.

“We are firmly committed to reducing the fuel consumption of our conventional petrol and diesel engines,” Volvo said about its upgrade of the Volvo auto parts for Efficiency.

Volvo is also concentrating on bio-fuels and hybrid technology and says energy-efficiency improvements are continuously being made to the company’s conventional drive trains. Coming soon, Volvo says, will be a Powershift gearbox that claims to reduce fuel consumption by about eight percent but, meanwhile, there’s the Efficiency which has taken fuel consumption below 4.5 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions to less than 120g/km

“This is a science of small adjustments and gains,” Magnus Jonsson, senior vice-president for research and development Volvo Cars said in an interview. “Many systems and details have been designed to suit all engine variants, from the smallest diesel to the most powerful petrol unit. This gives possibilities for fine adjustments to individual engine variants, particularly the smallest alternatives.”

So, the 1.6-litre Volvo C30 78kW turbodiesel engine comes complete with Volvo engine parts, which will become available in 2008 using at least 0.4 litres/100km less diesel and producing at least nine grams/100km less CO2.

“We are firmly committed to reducing the fuel consumption of our conventional petrol and diesel engines,” Jonsson said. “By doing this we will continuously reduce the overall CO2 emissions for our whole model range.”

The lower fuel consumption, he added, has been achieved through four main areas:

Aerodynamics - The Volvo Efficiency is lower, has a new rear roof spoiler, a new rear bumper, underbody panels, optimised engine cooling and aerodynamically optimized 16” rims.
Tires - Low rolling-resistance tires were included in the package.
Higher gearing - The unique gearbox variant has revised third, fourth and fifth gears.
Powertrain efficiency - This includes new low-friction transmission oil, optimization of steering servo assistance and engine management optimization.

The new Powershift gearbox will become available in Volvo C30, S40 and V50 units equipped with the two-liter turbodiesel (2.0D) engine. It has two manual gearboxes that work in parallel and are controlled by separate clutches. Since there is no disruption in torque delivery during the gear changing process, gearshifts are instantaneous and the efficiency rating is higher.

According to Volvo, they are working hard to improve other diesel engines and its petrol units. For the latter, the company’s experts are examining how direct fuel-injection technology can be further refined and are also looking at even more advanced control of the air/fuel mixture and valve control.

“When it comes to diesel engines, it isn’t fuel consumption that is the greatest challenge,” Jonsson said. “Here the main challenge is to meet the increasingly tough demands on regulated emissions such as nitrogen oxides and particulates without jeopardizing already low fuel consumption.”

The Volvo XC70

The upgraded Volvo XC70 is all set to be released in the Canadian Market by October, with a starting price of $46, 495. Still equipped with the same high-quality Volvo auto parts, the new XC70 roars in all its grandeur with a powerful the Volvo engine parts comprising of a 3.2 litre straight-six with 235 horsepower, a six-speed automatic transmission and all wheel drive with Instant Traction, making it all the more irresistible to the people. Capable in bad weather or on the trails, the XC70 includes a hill-descent control system as standard as well, which greatly helps it to safely scale down steep inclines.

“Canada is the fifth largest market in the world for the XC70 and a strong success story,” said Steve Blyth, President and CEO of Volvo Canada in an interview. “We found the second generation model resonated well with Canadian consumers, offering safety, luxury, versatility and all-wheel drive in one attractive package. The third generation XC70 takes things a step further, being a larger vehicle, with a more powerful engine, more standard and optional equipment and all-new styling.”

Stand-alone options include a blind spot warning system, priced at $750, which scans the XC70’s blind spots and alerts drivers if it detects a possibly hidden vehicle. Adaptive cruise control and collision warning technology is available for $1,500. This feature automatically maintains a safe cruising distance behind another vehicle and can ready the brakes for a panic stop if one seems likely.
