It’s an unwritten rule that one should never fiddle with the navigation system or change CDs while driving but a lot of motorists still do. The result of the negligence of this rule most often than not leads to rear end collisions. Rear end collisions actually account for one-third of the road accidents and researches have shown that during these times, drivers of the offending cars don’t even brake.
In order to combat this problem, Volvo has come up with one of the greatest Volvo auto parts which make up the Collision Warning with Auto Brake (CWAB) system. This upcoming Volvo collision brake system automatically engages the brakes of the vehicle if the driver fails to press on the brake in time. This system, however, does not intend to totally prevent rear end collisions but instead reduce the impact or damage caused by these accidents.
Director of the Volvo Cars Safety Center, Ingrid Skogsmo, said, “This can mean the difference between a serious injury and minor consequences for the occupants of both vehicles.”
This upcoming system will be available in the next model year for Volvo S80, V70, and XC70. This new CWAB, unlike the first generation system that was used on the Volvo S80 sedan, makes use of a camera and also a radar sensor, which processes the data through the software called the “Data Fusion.” Volvo said that the resulting new system is more efficient and reduces false alarms.
The technical project manger for the Collision Warning with Auto Brake at Volvo Cars, Jonas Tisell, said, “Since the system combines information both from the radar sensor and the camera, it gives such a high confidence level that automatic braking is possible if a collision is imminent. The system is programmed to activate autonomous braking only if both sensors agree that the situation is critical.”
