The Volvo for Life Awards

This athlete, teacher, community organizer, mentor, youth advocate and environmentalist-in-one is yet again up on the podium to prove herself worthy of one more thing.

The makers of Volvo auto parts are proud to present the Volvo for Life Awards, where they will grant honor to “real-life champions who are doing extraordinary work in their communities”. Marilyn Price, the Founding Director for Trips for Kids (TFK), was named as one of the finalists for the said awards. There are three categories that Volvo laid out. They are: Safety, Quality of Life, and Environment. Price is included in the second category, giving Trips for Kids a chance to receive $100,000. Price is also a Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee, and through this, she was able to reach out to the “underserved youth” the chance to grasp the real mountain biking experience. She is also opening the outdoors to these kids, who will eventually develop a priceless appreciation for nature—which is just what this generation needs.

So for those who want to help the advocacy of TFK, they may do so by voting online for Marilyn Price. Bagging the price will do a lot for the organization, let alone help more kids. From the good old days where Price preps her Volvo wagon with 11 mountain bikes, she now finds Volvo in a whole new meaning.

Volvo proves that they are not just excellent in creating high-quality Volvo auto parts, but also in finding true role models. Hence, they started the Volvo for Life Awards last 2002.

Volvo's Child Booster Cushion System

Volvo auto parts have always been number one in innovative car safety technology. It is no surprise therefore that they have developed a protective cushion for children who outgrew their toddler seats. Popular Science Magazine was not surprised either that the Swedish-established carmaker could make something like this, so they praised Volvo’s keen engineering. They gave international acclaim to Volvo’s engineering team, knowing they were very successful in giving a very safe and comfortable travel experience to the children.

The Child Booster Cushion works simply: it is combined with an inflatable curtain and tougher side body structure with load limiting seat belts, which will seat child passengers properly and cushion any impact forced upon them. This system was chosen among thousands of new products and innovations, and was selected as one of the 100 best new technologies for the year 2007. The title given to Volvo is the Best of What’s New award. Another best safety system from the makers of the Volvo auto parts indeed.

Since the design’s first launch in 2001, it has received many revisions to make it as polished and as fitting as it is today. The acknowledgment that Popular Science Magazine bestowed upon the system may help translate into bigger Volvo sales figures. But even without it, many parents will surely make the wise choice in purchasing this Booster Cushion when it comes out.

The Volvo XC90

In the town of Carrollton, 18-year-old Marc L. Miller has been collecting codes from Coca-cola bottle caps so that he could win a television from Coke’s rewards contest. Much surprise rushed to him when he found out that he now has the chance to take home the coveted Volvo auto parts of the Volvo XC90.

Coca-cola is sponsoring a rewards program for their customers. They have imprinted codes on bottle caps, and they are convertible to points. Points correspond to certain prizes, or to use for the sweepstakes, because bigger prizes are waiting. This is a marketing initiative that Coke started in 2006. Miller, enthusiastic to join for a new television, collected the codes from bottle caps and 12-packs and joined the contest through www.mycokerewards.com. But then, an angel probably whispered encouragement to him to try and go for the Volvo XC90 parts.

Which he did, and what a stroke of luck was with him indeed.

“I got an e-mail saying I won the Volvo,” he said in an interview conducted by the Saginaw news. “I was just jumping off the walls. I wasn’t sure if I would win or not, but then the dealer called me, and I was running through the house.”

Miller was overwhelmed with this turn of events, saying that it was worth a lot more than the television. He was not sure if he wanted to keep the Volvo auto parts though. He has been thinking about reselling it back to the retailer because there was still so much tax to deal with. Nevertheless, congratulations for winning the ultimate SUV Mr. Miller. While some could only drool at this SUV, you got it for free. We say keep on drinking coke, and then drive the XC90 home.
