Volvo Invests on New Racing Cars for STCC

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

The luxury car maker Volvo Car Corporation is serious in investing on new racing cars for the next three years. This effort is an upshot of the company’s cooperation with the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC), particularly in the bioethanol and Green Racing.

“Our decision is based on the positive attention and the good results that the recently concluded STCC season has meant for Volvo’s brand,” explained Volvo Cars Power Train and Engine Head and Recently Appointed Volvo’s Racing Department Lead Derek Crabb.

“It is now time to take the next step for the coming STCC seasons, and to meet the growing international interest in green racing”, added Crabb.

The automotive company will prepare for the STCC seasons to come by coming up with up to date green racing vehicles similar to the Volvo C30. The C30 is the model that most evidently exhibits on the market the environmental technology of Volvo. Versions like the Flexifuel and the forthcoming 1.6D Efficiency will definitely contribute a lot in Volvo’s efforts to promote the environment. The Volvo 1.6D Efficiency will offer an standard fuel consumption of 0.45 litres per 10 km (52 mpg-US/62 mpg-UK) and CO2 emissions under 120 grams per kilometre.

“The decision to leave this year’s racing car, a Volvo S60, was fairly simple. The Volvo C30 is a somewhat smaller and more agile car with excellent driving characteristics, even in the standard version,” said Crabb.

“Development of the new racing car will be done jointly by Volvo Cars and Polestar Racing, who has successfully handled our participation in STCC for several years. However, it is currently too soon to provide any detailed information about the construction of the new car. The objective, on the other hand, is crystal clear - we will develop a winning car,” concluded Crabb.
