“Alcoguard” by Volvo

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Volvo has developed another system to combat road accidents caused by drinking alcoholic drinks, which is similar to what Nissan also developed. The “Alcoguard,” is the name which the new system carries and it is an in-car breathalizer. This will prevent the car from starting its engine if it detects alcohol that is beyond the standard limit.

According to the officials of the Swedish automaker Volvo, one in three road accidents in Europe is due to alcohol drinking or is alcohol-related. That is why Volvo has come up the “Alcoguard,” to help decrease the number of this type of road accidents. This breathalizer uses fuel-cell technology to observe the driver’s alcohol and blood level.

To e able to start the vehicle, the driver must blow into the wireless hand-held unit. However, if the system detcts that the driver’s alcohol/blood level is greater than 0.2 g/1, the vehicle will not start.

With this new Volvo auto parts technology, Volvo hopes to help in leading a change in the general attitude towards driving while drunk.

This Volvo system will possibly be warmly welcomed in Ireland, wherein the country’s road accidents have reached epidemic levels.
